The Prague Shawl

We start at the beginning, that everything is better understood in order. What are you going to need to learn how to knit the Prague Shawl? We have used Valeria Lanas’ Prague quality wool and 2 skeins have been enough for us to make the size of the shawl the one you see in the photos. This type of wool changes its thickness as you go through the fabric, which gives it that special touch you see. Some parts are thicker and others are thinner. We love it !! But to tell you that if you have another wool, of any other type, the explanations that we are going to give you will serve you the same, you can make the shawl without problem.

The only thing that you should take into account is that if the wool is finer, surely you will have to do more laps so that it is of a similar size. But since the shawl is super simple and is done by repeating only 2 different laps, surely you have no problem.

We have used 8 mm needles because they are the thickest that the manufacturer recommends for this wool, but what has been said, you can adjust the needles to the thickness of the wool you have.

How to Knit the Prague Shawl (Starting)

We mount 3 stitches and knit 3 complete rounds to garter stitch (remember that in our explanations 3 rounds are 6 passes). Once the three rounds are woven, we will take out stitches on the side of that fabric that we have created. We take 3 stitches on the side (one for each round) and then another 3 stitches at the beginning of the fabric (in stitching). It may cost us a bit of work because the fabric will be tight and the feeling is that it will be wrinkled, but don’t worry, it will look nice later.

Now we are going to place a marker between point 5 and 6 on the needle and we are going to explain the two rounds that are going to be repeated on the shawl, one of them is knitted and the other is silly.

Lap 1:

Pass from the right: we knit 3 stitches from the right, we knit a strand, we knit from the right up to 1 stitch before the marker, we knit yarn, we knit 1 stitch, we pass the marker and we knit yarn. We knit until there are 3 stitches left, cast in 1 yarn over and knit 3 stitches from the right side.

Pas from the reverse: we knit 3 stitches from the right, knit from the wrong side until there are 3 stitches left that we knit.

Round 2:

Pass from the right: we knit 3 stitches from the right, we knit a strand, we knit from the right up to 1 stitch before the marker, we knit yarn, we knit 1 stitch, we pass the marker and we knit yarn. We knit until there are 3 stitches left, cast in 1 yarn over and knit 3 stitches from the right side.

Passed backwards: we knit all the stitches.

As we have explained before, these two turns are the ones that are constantly repeated in the shawl. We have knitted several sections of Row 1, which is the one that makes the jersey knit of our shawl and from time to time we have been weaving Round 2. That last round is what makes the waves spaced on the shawl show. . As you can see in the photo.

So, we invite you to knit the shawl in your own way, knitting Lap 1 a few times and when you feel like seeing the drawing of the wave, you knit Lap 2 !! So all the Prague Shawls will be very similar but none exact!

What we do recommend, as we have said in the video, is that at the end of the shawl you knit at least 2 times in row 2, at least that. It is the way to prevent the edge from turning upwards.

Once you have done the number of times you want Round 2, you only have to close the points. To do this, better on the wrong side of the shawl and knitting on the right. Try to close the loose points so that the edge does not get shrunk.
